Unlike steel cylinders, aluminum cylinders do not rust; they oxidize. This oxidization creates a protective layer that prevents further corrosion, reducing the likelihood of aluminum cylinders being condemned due to excessive corrosion.

The Catalina 100 cu ft (13.2 liter) cylinder has an 8” (20.3cm) diameter, weighs 42 lbs (19.1kg) when empty, stands at 26.5” (67.3cm) tall without the valve, and has a buoyancy of -5.2 lbs (-3.54kg) when full. When completely empty, the cylinder becomes positively buoyant, with a buoyancy of 2.2 lbs (1kg). This feature allows divers using a standard aluminum 80 cu. ft. (11.1 liter) cylinder to reduce the amount of lead required on their belt or BCD pockets by around 2 lbs (.9kg) and provides an extra 20 cu. ft. (3 liters) of air for each dive.

Upon shipping, the tank’s valves will be removed, and the tank will need to undergo re-inspection before being filled.
